How many of you replaced your intake and how do I know if I need to replace mine?

You never really "need" to replace an intake - that is, unless that car sat for years and everything under the hood is rusted out like nuts.

Replacing an intake is usually done for performance reasons only, by getting an intake with a better flow over stock. Further, when replacing an intake, one usually swaps out the camshaft and the carb as well, and maybe the headers, since they all work in unison - and this means more $$$!

If I did decide to swap them out, how much HP could I expect to gain? I'm not looking for anything too fast but another 30-50 horsepower would be kind of nice.

depending on the combination, 30 - 50 is a good guess.

A couple preliminary questions:

- Does the engine run fine right now?

- What is the engine, I presume a 289?

- Does your budget support engine mods, 'cause this stuff can easily run into in the thousands (couple hundred for intake, couple hundred for carb, couple hundred for cam swap, couple hundred for headers, hundred or so for all gaskets, etc...).

- Would you do the work yourself or have someone else do it - cause that's even more $$$.

- How close are you to turning 16? Cause this stuff takes time to do it right, and you know you're gonna want to drive that 'stang the moment you get your permit!!!

In all, unless you or your parents are loaded, then don't bother with things that don't NEED fixing, and just get that 'stang looking nice and driving safely. Sounds like you're on the right path with those already...

The engine (289) ran decent before I pulled a few things for replacing but it hasn't been run for a few months. My parent's budget would support whatever mods I wanted but they aren't giving me a dime . I'm doing all the work myself though and turning 16 on Feb. 9 (temporary permit comes on Wednesday). I guess I'll hold off on the intake but I'm worried about buying a 2v carb now, finishing the rest of the car, and then deciding I want more power which would require a 4v.

if ur gonna want to upgrade, shell out the money now, it will save you money in the long run. its not like you cant do just carb and intake at the same time and it wont help.....

I didn't totally understand your post...are you suggesting that I just buy the intake/carb but wait on upgrading the other things?

Yeah. I'm just worried about not getting it done by the time I'm 16 because all of my friends are saying that I can't do it...I run a pressure washing company and they don't think it's successful enough to finish the car. I wouldn't be able to drive it February anyways because of the snow though so maybe I should just go ahead and do what I want.

This is kind of random but I'm going to have to pull the coil off to get my valve covers on so can I gain anything from getting a new coil while I'm at it?

-Pardon my newbie questions
