Default 289 fuel problems

My 65 mustangs 289 is having problems getting fuel to the carb, I replaced the fuel pump and put a generic $15 fuel filter RIGHT before it pumps into the carb. The car will drive fine for a few miles but I get poor acceleration and it sputters and shuts down after a whyle. The fuel will barely squirt into the filter at idle most of the time. Lots of bits of crud and rust have accumulated in the filter and ive used it very little since I installed it to fix the problem.

I bypassed the fuel line and tank with a little red gas can and tube which runs straight to the pump. the filter was steady at 1/2 full of fuel the whole time at idle, even when I would accelerate the engine real hard. I think the Gas tank is full of rust from sitting so long and bits of rust got in the fuel line and cloged it up, could it be something else? any suggestions?

Im planning on buying a length of hose tomarrow and connecting that from the tank to the pump to see if it acts any different.

I had a rust ball in the line between the pump and carb on my '65. Compressed air is your friend when looking for clogs...

Might want to pull the sending/pickup unit out of the tank and see what it looks like. Sounds like crud in the tank and/or the line.

Colorado did you clear the clog with compressed air blast?

Yeah, I would guess there is rust in the tank, and in the line. Compressed air is the best way to clear out the rust in the lines, but you must first repair the problem. You may need a new tank, a new sending unit, and new lines that lead up to the carb. Use your common sense.

Yeah I figured if theres cancer in the line then the origin must be the tank, I have a spare and im gonna put it and the line in tomarrow. I just wanted a quick fix to get it down the road today, and I didnt wanna use bailing wire and duck tape
