Top speed problems

You folks that think a stock 289 with a 4 barrel should only do 75-80 on the highway are smoking something. Even a stock 289 2V with just about any stock gear set should do 100 easy!

yep, i got the 2.80 gears. and hit 110 fairly easy, but it's floored though. My handling isn't too bad at 100. I have a monte carlo bar, and the shelby drop. when i get done with it, i expect it to be able to handle great, at high speeds.
i also hit 80 around 3k and 100 around 4k.

I don't know what my top speed is because the speedo doesn't work, but the last time I took it to the track it did the 1/4 mile at 90 mph. I with many others sounds like a fuel problem unless you've got like 4:11 gears in there.
you do have some sort of a problem. I have had mine up to around 120. I just have an intake and carb. I would of course check the linkage between the pedal and the throttle. You can ajust it with a screw driver. Make sure that when you floor the pedal that it runs all the way through the throttle. If not adjusted it could be only 3/4 throttle or even half.
Thanks for the replies, even the smart-asses. I have an 8" rear end, a C4 tranny and 280 gear set. So it's not the gearing. I'll check the throttle linkage to be sure. A buddy thinks it might have to do with the dwell, or the distributor's not advancing. Any thoughts?
I'm going to guess throttle linkage. If you had a fuel or timming or advancement issue, it'd show up at all RPM's IMO.
The only other thing I can think of off the top of my head is some kind of govenor or such.
I'm kinda dumb founded at the comments of *these cars were not ment to go that fast - 100 is all you should expect* etc.
My 66' is no where near through the power band at 120+. It just scares me and I have to back out of it. Getting to 100+ is where the fun is. I've 2.80 gears behind a C4 - 302 w/ Matching Preformer intake / carb. I suffer a little at launch, but from a rolling start it really shines.

Back in the old days, schools used to put governors on school buses, which by the way, is dangerous. I don't think that this car has a governor on it, but check to see just in case. Now, to solve the linkage issue. With the engine off, take the linkage loose from the carb. With your thumb and forefinger, open the throttle to max. Now, with it open to max, grab your linkage and see if it will pop back on. If not, that is your problem.
Yep, people tell me, school buses still have governors on them, but i haven't noticed it. Something is definately wrong. It could be the timing not advancing. that has nothing to do with the car at idle, and as also said, the linkage might be adjusted wrong. I actually need to adjust mine alittle bit. My throttle opens alittle bit more then the pedal allows.
Mine maxes about 90....in second gear, those last two will definitely get you in trouble. Have no idea how fast mine is and its not enough car to find out. The areo on these things get bad after 100, the front gets very light and mustangs have been known to do a backflip at very high speeds .Find out what the troublle is with the throttle and engine , but be very careful about how fast you get it, it aint a pleasant feeling to loose steering at that kind of speed.
