Help with 66' Wiper/washer system!
Who knows a lot about 66' Mustang wipers? When I bought my car last year, it had a single speed wiper switch (functional) and a new washer bag with a washer motor under the hood, but no wires hooked up to the washer motor. The washer motor is supposed to be activated by pulling outward on the wiper switch, but the switch that was in the car didn't pull out at all. Pulling the switch out of th e dash confirmed that it only had 5 blades on the rear, no blades for running a washer motor. I had ordered (about 5 months ago) a new wiper switch and this one has two extra blades and DOES pull out to activate the washer motor. It is a single speed switch. I just placed an order with Mustangs Unlimited for a washer wiring harness that appears (per the picture) to run through the firewall and hook up to the back of the wiper switch at the two extra blades. The only thing that is confusing me is this. When looking in the Mustangs Unlimited catalog, it shows different pictures of replacement washer motors, and the picture which most closely resembles mine (WG1) on page 231 of their newest catalog states it is for a 2-speed wiper system.
How can I figure out if I have a 2-speed wiper system or a 1 speed wiper system?? Just because the switch on the dash is a 1 speed doesn't help if it's the wrong switch. Is anyone a wiper/washer GURU and can provide some insight for me? The car is a 66' Mustang GT Convertible, now a "K" clone.
Thanks so much,
Tom

P.S. I just sprung today for 5 Coker tires with dual redlines at $110 apiece. Couldn't fing them anywhere else at a cheaper price.

Now, you state your car is a 66 GT convertible that is now a K clone. However, the picture you gave shows a 6 banger. I don't understand......
Let's start from the beginning. You have a washer bag and a washer motor. The washer motor is one speed. All it does is squirt water on your windshield. You activate the washer motor by pulling out on the wiper ****. Now, the wiper motor will either be a one or a two speed motor. The switch for a two speed will have two notches when you turn it to the right. The first notch is the slow speed and the second notch is the high speed. If you only have one notch, then you have a one speed motor.
Now, you state your car is a 66 GT convertible that is now a K clone. However, the picture you gave shows a 6 banger. I don't understand......

I hope that clears it up, I have a terrible history of being too vague, resulting in misunderstandings.

King of the Stang world huh? Yeah, right....there are guys on here who run circles around me with knowledge about old stangs. What you need to do, is to make sure you have a 2 speed wiper switch and motor, then you just need to order the washer motor for the two speed system. The 2 speed switch has two contacts on it, and the single switch has one. If the two speed switch does not activate your wiper motor to go into the 2nd speed, then you have a one speed motor.
The two speed wiper switch is about $60. I was hoping to find a better diagnostic solution than buying another switch that might not work. Can you get me the part number on a 2-speed motor? I can then see if I have the same PN motor and THEN order a 2-speed switch.

I've got better things to do right now to include drinking a few brewskies.
OK, I've done the homework and have the skinny on wipers/washers!
A 2-speed wiper motor (under dash behind the instrument cluster) has a bellcrank on the front of it and the wiper rods hook up at separate ends of the bellcrank. A 1-speed wiper motor, on the other hand, has both wiper rods connected to the same pivot point. Also, each has a separate wiring connector at the switch and they are NOT interchangable. Lastly, the washer motor wiring is SEPARATE from the wiring harness for the wipers and runs continuously from the back of the wiper switch to the washer motor without any connectors. I also found out that windshield washer motors were federally mandated on 66' and later Mustangs, but optional on 65' Mustangs.
There you have it, the low down on 66' wipers/washers. And I did all the research myself...

Good post Tom,
Inquiring minds want to know what's in your car?
And also, where'd you get that two cylinder engine! (I'm only seeing two exhaust manifold runners in the picture)
