Default Distributor Problems

Ok, I've been at this for three day's now! I'm trying to install my new billet distributor, I have the car at TDC and I'm on compression stroke! I just can’t seem to get the distributor to seat. I also noticed that the oil pump shaft is very wobbly, is this normal? Are there any special tips I need to know? I’m so close to throwing it through my windshield. It’s a 289 1965 Mustang…… Help

You can't get it to go in at all? Or you just can't get the rotor to line up with #1?

I'm like maybe a 1/4 to 3/8 of a inch short of it seating down all the way!

In any position? Or can you get it to go all the way down in a totally different position? Are you VERY sure that the gear and length are exactly the same? I have heard someone tell me they had to turn the oil pump with a socket a small amount to get one to seat but I have never done this myself and I would be afraid to lose the socket in the engine!

You need to turn the pump shaft a bit. or, simply rotate the crankshaft a bit. No need to stick a socket down the hole.

This happens ever time I pull a distributor. No need to panic. Go have a beer and come back later. Works ever time.

Bump the engine over with the dizzy in and it will fall in.

If I rotate the crank I won't be at TDC? I played with the oil shaft and still had no luck!

The gear between the cam and dizzy is engaged, you're just trying to line up the oil pump shaft to the dizzy. Your rotor will turn if you bump the engine.
