fixing The Brakes
So my mustang has been sittin in the drive way for a couple years, and im finally old enough to work on it. first things first, are the brakes. The braks need to be pumped like hell in order for them to work. how do i fix the brake fluid??? can ne one give me a step by step process on how to do this? THANKS ALOT.......by the way they are drum brakes if it makes a difference......and yes i know i should change them to disc brakes, but i dont have the money right now.
After sitting so long you may need to replace the master cylinder and rebuild all four wheel cylinders. As far as brake bleeding, here goes......................
Fill the master cylinder. Have someone pump the brake pedal three times and hold pressure on it. You crack loose the bleeder fitting about 1/2 a turn. After you stop hearing fluid and air spit out close the bleeder and let the brake pedal up. Keep repeating on all four wheels until the pedal stays at the same place when you pump it. Don't forget to keep checking the fluid level in the master cylinder. If it runs dry you have to start all over.

MustangCavron66 you have 20 bucks? Let me give you a little suggestion, go out and buy a Chilton's guide, it should help you a heck-of-a-lot. Heres a couple of pictures. The Master Cylinder in Action
When you press the brake pedal, it pushes on the primary piston through a linkage. Pressure builds in the cylinder and lines as the brake pedal is depressed further. The pressure between the primary and secondary piston forces the secondary piston to compress the fluid in its circuit. If the brakes are operating properly, the pressure will be the same in both circuits. <--Simply said.
Heres another good reference for things, this taught me a few things in the past. www.howthingswork.com thats where that paragraph is from the have motion pics too. Heres the other link http://auto.howstuffworks.com/master-brake1.htm
Good luck.

Thanks Chris that helped me out alot!!! ill try and get that magazine. So y exactly dont the brakes work?? Is there no brake fluid in there or something??? and as u drain the fluid out, do you keep on adding more brake fluid in, and just replace it??
First off, are you driving the car? If so stop asap, thats not safe. Second the reason the brakes aren't working, maybe its out of fluid, maybe its the master cylinder. I haven't really messed around on brakes by myself, like transmissions I know a little about them, but I don't know enough about them. I know the parts and such, but I think this is why I have friends who know some of that stuff. I will try to talk to one of my buddies and see what he recommends, he has worked on brakes since I have known him. I have only bleed brakes once, and that was on a 02 WRX, and I don't remember a darn thing about it.
