Default Alternator regulator on '68 289

I realize this is probably a dumb question, but...

Where is the alternator regulator on a '68 289?
Shop manual schematic makes it look like it's between the starter relay and the alternator (mine is not).
Chilton's says it is in engine bay either below the starter relay or below battery (mine is not).

The car was my in-laws', and they kept it all original, so I had assumed it would be in the stock location.

The reasons I am looking for it:
1) The more the car runs, the more the battery discharges.
2) I took a loong drive (4-5 hours straight, bringing it from aforementioned in-laws') and the brand new battery showed signs that it had leaked some fluid from the caps (not good, I know).
3) The instrument panel ammeter never even wiggles, so I figure I've got an open somewhere, at least in the dash.

My 65 has it in the engine bay right next to the radiator, opposite the battery.

I had never thought to look on the other side of the bay [&:], but there it is, right next to the radiator.

Thanks MakiMaki!
