I've got the shop manual for my 68 Mustang, which does have wiring diagrams with lovely info about the colors of the wires; however, I was interested in knowing more useful information, specifically what gage wire is necessary in each instance. It doesn't seem to say this anywhere in the shop manual. Can someone please help me; I'm about at my wits end. It seems that every question that I have as I try to restore this Mustang IS NOT answered in the shop manual (or maybe I just can't find it?!).

Thanks, but I'm loathe to buy it without being able to see what is actually in the manual. It sounds no different than the the wiring schematics in the back of the Shop Manual. Thanks anyway.

 

You don't need to sweat the gauge of the wires if you order harnesses already made up to fit your application. Painless makes the exact harness you need, and all you have to do is plug it in. Deciding what gauge each wire should be would be a wiring nightmare. Don't go there, or you will have the boogy man in your dreams.

 

Good point, I did do it on a 58 Chevy, but the wiring was simpler, and the wiring diagrams did include the gage of wire as well as color. I actually used the next size up (lower number) for much of the wiring because the original wiring was so small and also because this simplified the number of different gages and colors of wire I needed to buy. I guess I was hoping to avoid the cost of wiring harnesses and just buy the spools of wire like I did for the Chevy (and use up the left overs as well of course). I guess that I'll start looking at the cost for the wiring harnesses/kits.

 

Here's some wiring diagrams that I have they tell you the colors but not the size, they are better diagrams than any book that I have seen. Let me know if you need a different one than what I posted and I will post it for you.

Thanks, that does look much better than the wiring diagrams in the shop manual and Haynes manual. Even though it is partially cut off in the example you posted, I like how it shows the routing of the wiring and names the parts. Takes out all of the guess work.
