Default Automatic transmission?

I though you could get a 4 speed transmission as an automatic, but my friend said i'd have to get a 3 speed? Is this true or is he full of it? What models are open for me? I have a 351. Thanks

Up until 1980, there were only 3 speed auto trannies for Mustangs. From 1980-1993 the 4 speed AOD was used, and from 1994-2000 the AODE was used in Mustangs. That's why a lot of guys are upgrading to the AOD or AODE.......to get that 4th speed overdrive.

Its not a difficult swap, the AOD will bolt to any 65 up small block, other than the 351/400M. Making it live behind a healthy engine, like one making over 450hp, takes a bit of work. There are some AODs in 9 second cars, but without the lock up converter and split input shaft.

I am pretty sure one will be going in the 71 Fastback and my 67 Cougar. I am spoiled on the ODs...

I just completed my first 4R70W swap and it was worth the money. No split shaft, no TV linkage, complete tunability of shift points, lock up and line pressure.

All of my AODs are now for sale.

So I should be looking for a 4speed AOD then? I imagine the AODE would be more difficult to install than the AOD? Im looking for something that wont give me too much trouble...

The AOD's are still a three speed but the converter locks at light throttle to give the overdrive. I have some experience with them in my father's Ford truck and it is all bad so far. It quit pulling with 68,000 miles on it and the transmission shop stuck a rebuilt unit in the truck that didn't shift right so they rebuilt his. Now with 3,000 miles on it it is starting to grunt when it shifts to second. I never had trouble with a C4 under 100,000 miles.

I have a 1997 4R70W from a T-Bird in my car. This is almost the same as a AODE but has a wide ratio gear set (lower 1st and 2nd) and other improvements. The lower first gear makes a 3.00 rear gear feel like a 3.70. And the .7/1 overdrive makes a 3.70 feel like a 3.00 on the hwy.
Mechanically this install is no more difficult that an AOD, perhaps easier since there is no need to fabricate the touchy TV linkage. How ever you would have to adapt a Throttle Position Sensor to the carburetor. The rest is all wiring and sitting at your computer designing your very own shift strategies.

Forget long tube headers. I have yet to see ones that fit around an AOD without modifications.

Warning: This swap is not for those with a tight budget. These trannys cost nearly $1000 to have rebuilt and the electronic control system is $425
I paid $200 for my tranny from a wrecked T Bird, $125 for a shift kit, $425 for the TCS and $300 for the shop to remove and replace the tranny. Do the math. Plus misc bs costs.

I feel that it's worth it. This is the most advanced automatic ever produced by Ford that will bolt up to a Windsor. Probabaly twice as durable as a regular AOD.
