Can I replace the rear main seal without pulling the engine? Is there a special tool? Please help Ralph

 

Remove the transmission and oil pan, loosen all of the main caps except the front one, and you should be able to slide the new one in...this can all be done under the car in your yard. The oil pan can be removed easily by taking out the K-Member and sway bar. Always be VERY careful and tighten up everything(double, even triple check) there is no room for errors when dealing with the frame support and underside of the engine. If there is an old rope seal for the main seal, then it may be necessary to pull the back of the crankshaft down about an inch in order to get all of old seal out, but this is an "Only When Necessary" case.

 

Drop the trans. Drop the pan. Pull the main caps and let the crank come down an inch or two. Replace the rear main and put it back together.
