Default Cleaning Cooling system

I removed my water pump this weekend that hadn't rotated in 30 years. No water left, just rust and scale. Is there anything I can spray on the timing cover that the pump mounts to to plean the corrosion off. Luckily the radiator still holds water well.

Why not just replace the water pump. A new stock one is only like $30.

Autozone usually has several water pumps to choose from. I purchased the remanufactured model last year as replacement. Painted it up and installed w/o a prob. Been working great. Also, don't forget to get an Autozone punch card while you're there. After 5-$20 purchases you can get a free $20 gift card...every little bit helps when trying to keep these older cars running.

He is talking about the timing cover, not the water pump. If memory serves me correct, that part is about $80.

Sorry, didnt read it well enough. In that case, just use a dremel or the like to get the corrosion off. Just dont cut into the metal.

I really need to clean up the whole system. I will buy a new pump at autozone (the lifetime warranty one is like $30) but I need to remove all the junk that is in the system. I am thinking about getting the garden hose and a nozzle and just flushing as much out as I can.

Don't buy any flush stuff. Just use water.
