Soaring, to my understanding the cowl hood is for: -Reduced height (bigger air filter dual carb setup blah blah) and -Helping despence heat, not get cold air in to the engine, but making it cooler by releasing some heat. Hope that helps some (correct me if im wrong please im not expert in anyway [&:] )

the area in front of the windsheild is low pressure when driving. air goes back toward the hood its low pressure and the high pressure moving air forces its way down there

Hey guys, I really love the look of the K&N XTREME!!! (sorry that word is so awesome) air filter. They have them in 14" which is what i have on my mustang now. However I want the height to be about 4 inchs (somewhere around there) The one i have on my car now is about 2, and with the wing nut on there is no thread on the thin sticking out of the carb left.
(whast that thing called?) My question is is that thin with thread that is sticking out of the carb long enough for a 4" filter? I dont think so but maybe there is a way. Hope some one can help i know that is a really really really bad explination and description of that thingy stickin out of the carb with threads....[&:]

In answer to your original question, we run one on a tarmac rally car, 355 cu in, bout 500hp. Works a treat, but as Cannonball said, needed a drop base to fit it under the hood. With a drop base, there is still enough thread on the carb. We also run a Harrop inlet manifold which lifts the carb so high, there is no issue with the air filter hitting the distributor.

Seems to me like everyone answered Soaring's question correctly. Their primary use is for clearance and they're particularly common on the 5.0's for some reason but here's a pic of one on a classic...

they are real common on the 5.0s because of the use of the upper and lower intake spacers and also 351w motors
