Default Surface Rust

What's the best way to take care of this. I just had a full paint job resto in 03 and I can see some surface rust forming around the chrome on the exterior of the car. Also, the bottom of the doors seem to be starting as well.

I had a tad bit of that too. What I did was to get a Q-Tip and soak it in "Rust-Away" which is a rust encapsulator like POR 15, then squeezed some of that around the chrome where it would run underneath the chrome where the surface rust was starting. That worked for me.

The problem with these old cars, is that the chrome allows water to get trapped between the chrome and the paint, and no matter what preparations take place, the water will eventually cause some rust.

Does rust away turn black? Will I need to repaint it after with touch up paint?

In order for there to be rust already, the prep was not complete or you had a scratch during the chrome trim installation. Even if you had standing water on the trim, it whould not have rusted through solid paint. If the water got to the metal, it was not absorbed through the paint. Metal had to be exposed of not completely prepped to start. 3 years is hard to get the painter to fix, but, just make sure it is all gone before re-painting or it will be back again.

Yes it does. Whenever the rust turns black, you know it is working. If it is exposed to where you can see it, then yes you will need to touch it up. Regarding paint........whenever exposed to the elements, paint will eventually break down and allow water to invade it unless it is protected by waxes etc. In the case of it being underneath chrome, dirt and water will eventually break down the protection that paint provides and will start to rust the steel.

post some pics.. If its rusting through the paint that is one thing, if something is rusting and leaving stains on the paint that is another. Cant tell what it is without seeing it, untill then its just a guess.
