restoring alternator, need direction again
hey guys,
as many of you know i am currently restoring my motor, and i have allready preped my intake manifold for paint, so its good to go. i pretty much preped every part that doesent have any electrical or mechanical components, IE intake, alternator bracet, valve covers, pullys etc etc etc. ok, no i need to start on the parts that have a function. i want to start with the alternator, what do i do, i dont think i can throw it in some desiel full and let it soak for 20 minutes then go to town with a brush. so my question, how to i go about restoring a alternator? thanks for any help

not a good idea to immerse it in an oil based liquid, or any liquid for that matter. It isnt tough to rebuild them, and you could polish the housing while its apart. But there are some things to know before you take it apart. Rebuild kits are available with new diodes, bearings and consumable pieces..
What alternator do you have? If its similar to one I have I can give you a specific rundown on rebuilding it, since I have to do the one for my 71 and my Cougar anyway.

I'm going to guess that you have some mechanical ability. Take the alternator apart and polish the housing, and paint it any color you want. You could go for an aftermarket chrome 1-wire for $150 or so....could be a big chunk if you're on a tight budget.
