this is something i always wanted to know...Why do we have mufflers if we want it to be louder? do we need some back pressure? why do the real cobras run stright headers? my dad always told me it would ruin my engine is i ran stright pipes...what would happen?

When you say 'we', who are you refering to?
Some of us like it quiet, so we have mufflers.

Look at your typical US made motorcycle. The owner junks the factory pipes and installs loud ones. Ends up with a machine that sounds like a 350 chevey with 2 dead cylinders and pisses off the neighbors.

Yes you need back pressure. Open pipes are for race engines that run at wide open.

A nice mellow tone is more pleasant, but I find my 40 series irritating between 1900 and 2100 rpm, so I drive faster.

so you want it to sound like we're all driving harleys around?

Mufflers make it so you can sleep at night.

First of all, where do you live that you see Cobras run everyday?

Secondly, you ask if you'll hurt anything. Well, yes; namely your hearing. Think I'm joking? You've obviously not driven a car with no mufflers for any distance. It's not a pleasant muscle car rumble. It's an earth-shattering, window-breaking, clappy racket that won't impress anybody.

No mufflers is going to be irratating sounding and I would not want to be around your car. U can also develop the tone of your exhaust given the different setups of mufflers.

Running straight for the heads is gonna be insanely loud in the cabin, dumping a load of heat in the cabin and engine bay, and land u a hefty fine...

I had a blown exhaust gasket (one of the donut ones) on one of my exhaust manifolds... I like the super noisy sound for about 20 minutes. Then I hated it. Get a louder set of mufflers if you want a lot of noise.
