Is there supposed to be a light that illuminates the gear selection (P, R, N, D, 1,2) on a 70 Mach 1 with Automatic transmission. They are hard to see in the dark.

Yup, take the cover off and you should see a bulb socket in there. I just went and installed a new shifter
