Default 66, 260 Engine

I'm looking for info on the 260 cu in V8. My wife recently saw a 66 Coupe with a 260 for sale, and she wants me to consider selling the 68, 289, project in favor of this possibly finished 66. I can't seem to find info on the 260, 66 Mustangs other than some passing references. Most sites even say that teh 260 was no longer available in 66 while a couple indicate it was still available through early 66. I would like to go look at the vehicle with some idea of value just in case I decide to make an offer. I've got the room, for the moment, to have both Mustangs while I redo the interior and replace the ball joints and various bushings on the 68 before sellng it at hopefully no loss other than my time and effort.

Also what type of power can I expect to get from the 260 with exhaust, intake, and carb mods without touching the cam, in other words, bolt on mods?

It is my understanding that the 260 was only availible in the 64 1/2 and the early 65. I had never heard of a 260 in a 66. I would tend to believe that if the car is originally a 260 that it will turn out to be a 65 but I"ve been wrong before.

The 260 was no longer available after August of 1964. I have never heard of a 66 with a 260 in it from the factory. It could be a transplant though. Check the VIN carefullly when you go to see the car.

Sounds like it's a 65. My wife saw it parked along side the road driving down to her parents, and she said it had 260 emblems on the fenders. She didn't actually look at the engine as we still need to contact the guy. He was advertising it (sign in the car's window) as a 66. I'll print up the VIN decoder info for both the 65 and 66 Mustang before I go see it.

If it has a generator, it's probably a 260 or a 289 D code. If not, it's a 289 C or A Code.

http://www.bradbarnett.net/mustangs/...4-66/index.htm

This will probably help, it gives alot more info then most sites I have found...... The 260 is only made in 64 1/2 acording to the site but that is to be expected if they only had 260's durring the very first part of 65.

a 260 is not the same block as a 289, YOU CAN NOT BORE A 260 OUT TO THE SAME BORE AS A 289!
