theres really no way to tell if the alternator is hooked up right as no one seemed to have a definite "this wire goes here...etc" so i just hooked it up just like the original one was hooked up....

how would disconnecting the battery and let it sit tell me if the battery was being drained....??? how could it be drained then if thats whats happening?

hey,
if you have an accessory or something on that you dont notice, or something is drawing current even when the ignition is off your battery will get drained. It may be hard to figue out what it is. If you disconnect the battery it will tell you if that may be the problem. If your car starts after you hook the battery up then something is draining current form the battery or the battery is dead because it has been drained down to many times. Soemtimes once a battery has been drained down it wont hold a charge.
As for the alternator, do you have a voltmeter? Hook that up and rev the car, it should go up above 12 volts if its charging. If its a three wire alternator the wires should go to a ground, to the starter solenoid on the side where the positive battery is connected and to the voltage regualtor. On my car the orange wire goes to the voltage regualtor.
If you alternator was bad you would have probably gotten more then one start out of the car with a brand new battery.
Just try starting the car and letting it run for a few minutes to build a charge. After the car has run turn it off and disconnect the battery. The next day try and start the car and see. if the car starts then its not the battery itself and its soemthing else. Probably something draining current, like an accessory left on. Do you have an electric fan that runs to long after the car is turned off?

nope sure dont. i dont even have a radio or anything anymore....i do have an eletric choke though....this kinda stuff has been going on even before the headlight harness wires got cut on the alternator fan...the car ran relaibly for a while after i fixed those wires then sort of started to become very iffy if you were gonna be going home once you took it somewhere....i should prob go exchange this new battery for a fully charged one since this one has been drained for so long....huh?
