Default Snapped Speedo cable?

Just put a new speedo cable on my 1970 mustang last night (was disconnected at speedo and missing retainer clip when I got the car). Rode around for awhile and it speedo stopped. Pulled out gear at tranny and found the cable bound up and snapped in the plastic gear. Gear was okay. Pulled dash and speedo in back turns freely by hand. Looked a little closer at the old one and it looked like it snapped at the speedo head.

Will send back to CJ but was wondering what could make it snap like that I oiled it before installing and it did not appear bound up in any place. Box did say made in Taiwan. Any ideas?

I had the same problem. When I took out the old one I found it was too close to the exhaust manifold and melted in one spot. Something to check.
