That is not a Monte Carlo Bar. And yes, those bars are only on verts. I see you don't have an MC or an export brace. You might want to consider adding those for additional front end support. Whenever my budget is right, I will be addin the export brace, but for now, my cowl to shock tower will do.

I know they are not Monte Carlo bars. Let me re-phrase my questions. Did you have any bars on your car to begin with? If so what did they look like? Are the support bars on the vert and notch back different. Is this an upgrade I would do on a vert or is the Monte Carlo bar just for the notch back?

Walt, you have the same engine bay as I do. You can add any braces to your engine bay as I can. And to answer your question, no I didn't have any aftermarket bars added to my engine bay before I added this Monte Carlo Bar. My engine bay is totally stock.

Soaring,
I am trying to figure out what bars go with what cars in the stock configuration and what is not stock. I am also trying to figure out what I can add that would just make it stronger but would work on my vert.
Thx, Walt

Ok Walt, Stock, The only thing a coupe, or fastback had, was the braces to the shock tower to the firewall. Every mustang has one. The convertibles had the bars like you have. A monte carlo bar is the bar that goes across the compartment, and it's an add-on. The export brace goes in place of the shock tower to firewall brace. hope that helps.

Hi Walt,
Only the convertibles had the diagonal round tube bars, and were not there on the '64-1/2. There is a difference in the bars and the way they attach to the inner fenders between '65 and '66. None of the hard top cars (coupe or fast back) came with those two bars. All stock cars for the U.S. market (non-Shelby) had two bolt in plates that went from the center of the cowl to the top of the shock towers. Vehicles destined for export had a 1 piece brace that replaced those two plates. Hence what we call the "Export Brace". The Monte-Carlo bar that runs horizontally across the engine compartment in front of the shock towers did not come stock on any of the Mustangs.
You have what appears to be original for a '65 convertible. Glen's car is original except for the Monte Carlo bar.

Hope this helps clarify what you are looking for.

Not all will agree and I'll more than likely get some flack over the suggestion, but if you are only going to do one, do the export brace first as it provides direct tower suport. I really recommend doing both the export brace, additional firewall brace (helps support where the export brace attaches to the firewall) in addition to the Monte Carlo Bar. The results I got with mine were really great. I have also subsequently have added the 1 inch sway bar to the front and hope to do the rear on next years mods.
The factory brace I now have in there is secondary to the MC as far as front end support is concerned.
Hey Soaring, I also installed a curved monte carlo brace myself, the reason I did this is because when my old original brakes were replaced by power disc brakes, the new power booster was too large to fit under the right export brace, so that came off, now my car has only the monte carlo bar, and the left hand export brace.

Is this good enough, or is it essential to have the export brace on the right side despite the addition of the monte carlo bar?

...and if not, what can I do about it?

Keep in mind my car is 64 1/2, so it's the little fellow we are talking about here, small engine compartment.

p.s. I bought it from mustangplus.

Walt, what you have is correct for a 65 vert. the bars you have are conv. export braces and conv. cowl braces. you can remove either and replace them w/an export brace and mc bar.
