Transmissions??
Ok...lets say I have a '65 coupe with a 302 under the hood, bolted to the original 4sMT. What would be the designation of this transmission?? T5....C4...what?? I need this info so I can get a shifter rebuild kit....it is the original trans and shifter (which has me guessing as to what gear I'm in, and it takes 2 men and a boy to get it into reverse).
65's didn't have 302's from the factory, and the transmission choice was either a C4 auto or a 3 or 4 speed manual. I have never heard of that transmission. Obviously someone has changed the engine and the tranny out.
Yes the engine has been changed but the ORIGINAL 4 speed manual transmission and shifter were kept. I need to know what the transmission is called......the model type so I can come up with a shifter rebuild kit.
yeah, if its a older model 302 with a standing tranny, its prob. a t-5. you dont hear of many 302"s in 65. you sure it isnt a 289? theres not much difference from the heads down. i dont know which motor was produced first? but the 289 and the 302 go together like peanutbutter and jelly! parts swaping wise.
Yeah, either a top loader that was generally put into the A and K code cars or the Borg Warner as mentioned. This 4sMT is an animal I have never come across. How do you know it is the original transmission? Did you decode the car?
4sMT is his way of saying 4 speed manual trans. it isnt a T5 if its a 4 speed. it isnt an automatic and it could well have a 302 with the original 4 speed behind it. T5 means FIVE SPEED not 4 speed.. I am sure he would know if reverse wasnt in the right spot and if it had an extra gear in it.
What you need to know is where the inspection cover is. If it is on the top of the trans, its a toploader, if its on the side and the shift levers stick out of it then its a T10. Chances are its a toploader in there. Crawl under it and take a look.
this is a pic of a toploader. There is an inspection cover on the top if you look closely and the shift levers dont come out of a cover, they come out of the case.

This is a T10 trans, yes its the GM type, but the trans is still identifiable. if it doesnt look like one of these then its something else. And that should make it easier to get the right parts for it.
