i got two questions first is the 289 and the 302 indentical if not what are the differences an second where is the engine code to identify the motor i am pulling my engine out this weekend i was told it was a 302 but i pulled off the valve covers it said 289 on the heads

They differ in the crank. Early 289's also had 5-bolt bell housings.

Check the numbers on the block by the starter. The best way is to check the numbers on the crank, though.
