transmission problems after overheat?
hey there everyone, I have a 1973 302 threespeed. the radiator recently blew out on me and it over heated a bit, and ever since then it has lost some power, and the transmission has been all screwy (low torque, slow to grip). the other thing is that sometimes when it gets shut off, somthing in the transmisson will keep trunning over and make really nasty sounds.
my question really is does this sound familiar to anyone, and if so, any ideas as to what it might be?
any help would be a appreciated.

This reply is assuming you have a 3 speed automatic tranny. Sorry bud, but you are probably going to need a tranny rebuild or replace it with a fresh tranny. I had that same problem with my truck last summer, so had to shell out over 2 grand for a fresh tranny. The bands just start slipping like a ****, and take forever to shift, or they jump into the next gear and jar your head against the seat with a very hard shift. Take the car up to about 45 MPH, then let off the gas pedal and see if it will shift on it's own without the slipping or jarring. If that is the case, then you need to change out the tranny. As far as the engine is concerned, do a compression test to see if you have about a 10% difference between all cylinders. If you do, then your power is being lost in the tranny. If not, you may have burned a valve or two.
thanks for the reply. I have a manual by the way. i was thinking of putting on a 4 speed anyway before all this, but i just want to see if anyone has some ideas as to what else might be going on
what do you mean...slow to grip?
are you talking about the clutch slipping?
if the car is stationary when you switch it off, the gearbox wont make any noise.
something else is wrong there

Sounds like you have clutch problems. Overheating an engine won't affect a manual tranny. You may have damaged the heads, as Soaring hinted at, but the tranny problems aren't related.
