Distributor ?'s.
i have a 68 289 and it has the dual diaprhagm dizzy and the three-port switch above the thermostat housing. I am wanting to get rid of all this cuz for one, i just dont like it, two i think the dizzy is junk, and three it clutters it up with all the vacuum lines runnin. Im wonderin if i should just get one of those cheap HEI's off ebay (55 bucks) or go for a used stock replacement. anybody have one that will fit a 289/302? Also in getting rid of the old dual diaph. dizzy i should be able to switch out the thermostat housing for a regular one right?
289 = 302 firing order.
I don't know about you guys but when I see a GM distributor under the hood of a Ford it may as well have a Chlttylay 350 in it. I quit looking at it and walk on by.
I'd go with a Duraspark or a Pertronix setup.
*The HEI is about the slickest and cleanest factory electronic ignition system there was. But I'd still walk on by.

So you have it running then or is coughing and farting with no start?
Check the stupid stuff first ie, firing order is where I'd start. Maybe your a tooth or more off. Pull the cap & #1 plug then rotate the engine see if your compression stroke matches the rotor position and matches the harmonic balancer markings.
I just ran in to a similar problem last week dropping the distributor back in to my 351w. The wires were correct and the sparks at the plugs were pure and white.
I couldn't figure out for the life of me why it was coughing and farting until I stumbled upon the fact that I was keying off of the wrong set of timing marks on the harmonic balancer. About 180 degrees off, she was. I lined every thing up and she couldn't wait to run.
duhr.
