Default weird/scary squeaking from the back

Hi all,

i have a 1964 1/2 coupe that originally cam with 170 or 200cid. front and back drum brakes. 3 spd manual.
This was changed over to a 289 V8.
I changed shocks and springs in the front as the car was too low in the front.

The car was going fine for the last 3 months, but since yesterday the following happens:
when i floor it then shortly after or during it (can't tell as exhaust is loud) it start squeking.
But really scary.
It comes from somewhere in the back and I can't tell exactly what it is.
It can be the anything behind the gearbox.
It sound metal rubbing badly on metal. Somehow when the brake pads are gone.
But I wonder why I don't hear it when i brake ?!

When i stop the car I can't hear anymore what it is as I can only hear it when moving.
It happened for the 3rd time now and in all occasiosn it stopped when I stopped the car to check and then it was gone until I floored it the next time.

It scares me so I want to check the brakes tomorrow.
Any other ideas ? is this a known thing ?
I looked under the car already, but i can't see anything stuck in there or unusual. so it seems to be something out of sight

thanks for any insight

Perhaps your differential is dry and grinding?

thought about that as well,
but I wonder why the noise stops again ...?! the right side (brake anchor plate is dry), but the left side is greasy (very old though).

Anyway. I'll check on it as well. just to be sure.

It could be a dry diff like baddog said.

It only makes the sound under load?
is it quiet at high speed with no load?

you might want to check your U joints. (probably not but check them anyhow)

If you have you wits about yourself and a few friends to help you, you could jack the rear off the ground and place it securely on jack stands so the wheels dont touch the ground.
With the engine off give them a turn by hand, the differential should feel smooth no bumps or tight spots. Also check to rub marks all around the rear. Start the car up and "accelerate" a few MPH and have some friends listen for abnormalities. As long as you think and have a good working environment its a safe procedure.

If your car stops then its not turning, no noise...if thats what u mean by that..

Pull the plug on the pumpkin and fill it till it starts to pour back out the hole

i don't have proper material to jack the car and trust the thing accelerating to reproduce the problem. So I probably have to go down the road of checking for everything (taking it apart).

The noise is very load. and it sounds like I have an anchor pulling behind me and that thing is scratching off the tarmac off the road. Really scary.
I was in a one way system where i would have to drive slowly and couldn't stop to check.
after i went around a bend it was gone again.
it is gone when i fully stop the car for sure (that was me explaining it not good enough). Sometimes it's still there when i drive off and sometimes it's gone.
I can't really tell what makes it go. maybe braking, maybe cornering.
What i know for sure is when i have a good spot where I could check (not in the middle of a crossing ...) then it is gone for sure (just to annoy me)

anyways. i'm too afraid to drive it until i know what it is. I'll keep you updated.
I hope it's a brake pad gone loose. (easier to fix tyhan a diff)

I wouldnt drive it anymore becuase if its grinding, its screwing something up. All you need to check your diff is a 1/4(i beleive) rachet.

It could be a lot of things, but three come to mind instantly. U-Joints, differential and rear wheel bearings. Have those three checked. My guess is that it is the rear wheel bearings.

What kind of rear end do you have? If it's the original from behind the sixers, you will probably be looking at a rear end upgrade.

i'm pretty convinced it's the original rear end.
What would i need for an upgrade (it;'s nearly imposible to get parts here in Ireland)

And what are U-Joints ? (not native english) can you let me know where they sit ?
