went out. [:@] I checked the light switch, and it's fine. I checked the fuse, and it's also fine. I also checked to make sure that power is getting to both ends of the fuse while it's sitting in the fuse box, and power is getting there. What next? I understand that there may be some type of voltage regulator just for the instrument lights - might this be it?

The voltage regulator is for the gauges not the lights. How did you check the light switch? That is usually what the problem is.

The small fuse in the fuse box is dedicated to the instrument lights. I checked both ends of the fuse while it was in the box with a check-light (yeah I know, not the best way to check, but it should be sufficient here). I checked the fuse with the light switch off (check light does not light up) and again with light switch on (check light does light up), so I presume the light switch works.

So, is the only option now to trace the wires from the fuse box to each instrument light?

I thought the IVR has to do with the gauges and lights? I guess not. They are damn expensive though, $30 something for one of those little guys. Why not try replacing the bulbs? They are dirt cheap at NAPA.

I'm dealing with the same issue, dash lights don't work. One thing you might try is use a meter set on ohms and with no power going through the circut test from one side of the fuse I think it is the right side. And if you have not already removed the dash instrument cluster do so. You will need to disconect the spedo cable. Then remove one of the dash light bulbs from the socket and put the other lead on the center of the socket. that will tell you if you have continuity from the fuse to the light.

Also I got this diagram from someone on another forum, with the headlight switch removed from under the dash but still pluged into the connectory use the pointed leads on your meter with a voltage setting and you can check for power going into the switch and comming out. To test for power going out you need to turn on the headlight switch and turn up the dimmer. These are some of the things I tried.

You can also try a jumper cable and go across the B to the I terminal on the connector that way you are bypassing the switch and if the light goes on your switch is probably bad.

19stang66 Buy the way what is the IVR?

Let us know what you find out.

Could still be the switch itself if the dimmer doesn't work. You will be getting juice running through it, but it could be stuck on dim, therefore acting like there is no juice to the bulbs.
