Default Morse Code Part 2

OK. Part 1 consisted of me spelling Morse wrong and my shifter light blinking after I unhooked my steering wheel. I was hoping the problem would be solved when I put the new steering wheel on. Part 2 is, the new steering wheel is on and the light stay's constant for about 5 seconds and then starts to blink again. Any idea's? Thanks gang, Scott

Hi Scott,

sorry to hear the previous advice didn't work for you. What year is your car?
I am thinking there may be a back feed through a poor negative circuit, or it could be as simple as the filiment in the bulb has fractured.
You could start by removing the bulb and using a test light in it's place. If the test light does the same flashing thing, it's not the bulb and you need to start looking for "common" circuits. Don't forget to look closely at the ground for this bulb, and any other common circuit.
(IMO) best way to approach this repair (after checking the bulb), is with a schematic and voltage drop tests.

Good luck,

Thank you for responding. I was begining to think I was going to have to have the radio on constantly. It is a 68. The weird part is that it stays on (constant) for about 5 seconds before it starts to blink. The blinking doesn't look so bad as long as I have music playing, then it at least looks like it's meant to be blinking to the music. Thanks for the advise. I will try the test light. I've never done a drop test with a schematic (hell, I could have schematic and not even know it by that name) I better learn though because I read that as a requirement for allot of the trouble shooting on these older cars. Thanks again. Scott

This is a good article on checking the starter system. It uses "voltage drop" tests. I just did a quick google search under "Voltage drop test". There is a lot more information available on the internet.
If you get the idea presented in this article, all you need to do is move that to your light circuit. If you aren't comfortable reading schematics, try www.ask.com and type in something like "How do I read electrical schematics". There is all kinds of information out there with pictures, diagrams, etc., that will help you get a better grasp on automotive electrical.
Good luck with your "project".

I had a '66 Mustang back in the 60's and seem to remember that If you held down the brake pedal, put on the left blinker and turned on the emergency flasher, the radio would play intermittently. Since it was so long ago, I may not have the combination exactly right, but I would replace the emergency flasher unit.
