Default 289 vs. 302

Going to be looking at 64 1/2 sometime in the next few days, the owner said the engine was replaced (not rebuilt) but doesn't know if it was replaced with a 289 or 302... Not that it matters much being basically the same thing, but just curios, does anybody know a way of telling which it is without pulling the starter???

The only differences Im aware of in production 289 and 302 blocks is the bellhousing bolt pattern of the 66 and earlier 289. The only difference in a 68, 289 and a 68, 302 was the displacement.

the 289 is more responsive and revs a little but higher ya it won't have as much torque as a 302 but hp wise bout the same

take the carb off, and take the intake manifold off and it will be stamped right there where the lifters are.
