Default 65 5.0 conversion

I have a 64 1/2 convert. that I am restoring and want to convert to modern gear. I bought the car with the engine bay stripped, so I am not worried about saving any original bits. What year of engine would be the easiest swap? I would like to go as new as possible, but with the least amount of body modifications. I would like to buy an 80's ? 90's? car complete and take the engine, trans, Alternator, headers and down pipes to the o2 sensors ect. What I know so far is that I will need to buy the electrical overlay kit, change the driveshaft, and add a fuel return to the gas tank. Cost is also an issue. I know I can all up some specialist company and buy it all with everything except an arm to turn the wrench, but I am looking to do this myself and do it wisely. The car is out of the paint shop in a few weeks and I need to make some decisions soon. Any hands on advice or experience would be appreciated. Does anybody know of a websuite where this has been done, or some mechanic that has scratched up a 'how to' manual?
Thanks,
Soon to be cruising, Steve.

ive done it its rather easy. you can buy a new tranny chrossmember at the first link and that is all u need to mount the tranny. you could make a mount if your good at welding i made my own from a stock chrossmember from a 91 5.0 and it works fine. im prety shure you can use the stock drive shaft but i never tryed i just bought an alluminum one. you can drill a hole in the stock fuel sending unit and silver sauder a return line in there or you can buy an alredy made one at the 2nt link. i welded up a bracket to mount an in line fuel pump out of a mercadies but you can be creative and figure sompthign out for that one. i used the stock wireing harness and it works fine i just drilld one hole in the pashanger side firewall to run it thru for the computer. you have to splice the ignition wire to a red/green wire from the harness. you can find it in a wireing diagram but its for the power control to the efi system ands it is the onely wire u need to splice. the motor will fit with the stock motor mounts but you should replace them obvisley 41 year old motor mounts are a bad idea.

As for the engine, find one that already has a MAF. Earlier 5.0's has a speed density system, which doesn't work as well with modifications. Head to the 5.0L section and ask away.
