Default Engine and Tranny

Hey all I got a 1964 .5 and the car sat for countless years...The man i got in from claims he drove it in like 2 years but you cant necessary go by that im not saying he is a liar but yeah. Anyways its an inline 6 with whichever tranny my question is will the transmission need to rebuilt after sitting over all that time? I plan to rebuld the engine this winter but if im going to have to rebuild the tranny im gonna need to work some overtime and save some extra cash. Im only in highschool (first time ever trying to restore a car from scratch) oh and does anyone know the average cost for a tranny rebuild?

Which tranny is in it? A C-4 or a 3 speed manual?

Im assuming a C-4 since its auto (used to be 3 speed then switched to auto according to the previous owner)

I would drain all the old fluid out and clean the filter. Put new Type F tranny fluid in it and see if it works. That would be the cheapest way to find out what you have before you start tearing into it.

Not sure if it's still available, but if you can find a can of K&W Trans-X, it's really good stuff. Follow Soaring's advice, and if you can find it, toss in a can of the Trans-X. I'm not into additives and all that kind of stuff. It was my buddy whom I lost a bet to, that convinced me it really works. Since that time, I've run it in 5 or 6 old C4's and one C6, and damned if the stuff doesn't work very well. It's saved me way more than the lunch I had to buy the bum, so I don't feel too bad!
Also get a good service manual that shows you how to adjust the bands. That's critical for longevity of a C4.
C4 is a very easy transmission to rebuild. It is a great one to learn on.
Good luck,
