Gas odor

Gas odor
After a drive in my 65 Fastback, I smell like I rolled around in a puddle of gasoline. My garage also has that gas type odor. I have checked fuel lines and behind the carb for any leaks, but could not find any. I also checked the filler pipe and it appears to be ok. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Could an exhaust leak account for this? Although, I guess if it was an exhaust leak that wouldn't account for the smell when the car is not running.
Thanks.

RE: Gas odor
I had the same and when i changed the flexi-pipe from gas cap to tank although it looked fine on the outside inside it was cracked and now the car smell much better. So it may not be your problem but it's a cheap fix worth trying.

RE: Gas odor
Thats what charcoal canisters are for, theyre meant to trap gas fumes and recirculate them. I dont think your car is equppied with one, being a classic. I believe 1973 was the first year it was mandatory to have charcoal canisters and cats.
But definitly check your fuel lines/tank etc. if the rubber lines are hard (like pastic), they need to be replaced, and it being such an old car it wouldnt be a bad idea to replace all the lines anyway. Like someone else suggested check the rubber seal going to the tank from the filler neck, even though it might not appear to be bad, it probably hardened up, and isnt creating a good seal anymore.

I do not have a seal where the cowl meets the hood - never noticed it was missing. I better get one on there.
As far as running rich, the car probably is. When I start the car and give it gas I leave pretty good size black mark on the concrete below the exhaust tips. Does running rich mean the carb is getting too much gas? Thanks.
