Rear shocks?

Rear shocks?
So yesterday I went to look at a local 66 mustang that I'm trying to buy. He took me for a spin in it, and then was showing me everything about the car. He then opened the trunk and showed me a valvestem in the trunk and said it was for some sort of air shocks, and you just air up that valve stem and it raises the rear end to fit bigger tires. Is this true? I've never heard of that. Do all mustangs have that? This is a 66. He also said it's a ford 9" rear, but as far as I know they all have 8.8s, so I'll have to check that out. Is there a way to visually tell the difference between an 8.8 and 9"? Thanks guys.

RE: Rear shocks?
If you buy this car, the first thing you should do is remove those shocks. Air shocks do not belong on our classic mustangs! Since there is no real anchoring plate for them, they will eventually "punch through" the trunk floor, which will require a costly fixing. Shocks are not expensive, so I wouldnt let that alone deterr me from the car. KYB GasAdjust are the best bang for the buck and are 30ish dollars

those shocks rnt factory but they rnt uncommon and there is no way the rear could be an 8.8 cause ford hadnt developed the 8.8 till years later the only rear ends it could be r the 8in 9in or the 6cyl 7 1/4 rear end

RE: Rear shocks?
Dont know anything about the rear end but it must have air shocks on it. Their are multiple reasons for using air shocks, to fit a bigger tire or if you just like the look. Some draw backs are it makes for a rough ride when they are aired up and if you do put huge tires on their and you blow a shock (which isnt too hard to do) then your tire could tear into your quarterpanel/wheelwell. If you like the higher look i would put regular shocks in and get some leafs that raise the rear end

RE: Rear shocks?
ic thanks for the quick response. couldn't one just put in a say 1/4 strength plate under there where they mount to spread the stress so it doesn't damage the floor? Yea I know it would probably be easier to just get different shocks, but hey I'm 16, these sound cool

Yeah when i was 16 with my 66 caprice i wanted the air shocks and whenever i replace them i am going with regular shocks.
Besides the bad stuff, the thing i liked best about them was when i jacked up the rear it was easy as hell to spin the tires... sucked in the rain though. to each their own
