C4 Problems.. PLEASE HELP
I just got a brand new rebuilt C4 tramsmission with a brand new torque convertor. I put it in my car myself and got everything back together... but its not working. I am able to shift into gear and itremoves off the parking brake. But the car does not go into gear. It seems that every gear that i put the car in it is in nuetral. I have checked the fluid levels and they are all fine. What could be causeing my problem. The only thing that i did to the transmission is drop the mechanism that the filter is connected toso i couldput a stock shift arm into it. The company that rebuilt it said i could do that. I bolted that filter/shifting mechanism up and i can put it in gear but it wont drive. I also have a deep pan. Does that mean i should use more fluid and should i still use the indicator on my stock dipstick? Currently i am using more fluid than a stock pan would have and i have it filled to the dipstick line. (i checked it while the car was hot too)
Maybe you ought to contact the company that rebuilt it and get their recommendation on how to proceed. Before you do anything else to it, I would make sure it was not something they didn't do.....
Just curious. Did you fill the converter before installing it? If you're sure the Converter is lined up properly and everything is installed correctly, you should get atleast one gear even if you didn't fill the converter.
It's sounding like a Monday build. ( Whoever built it did it on a Monday when they were still drunk from the weekend ).
Good luck with it all.

First, did you check the fluid level after starting the engine? A stock C4 takes somewhere around 7 quarts of fluid. Once you start the engine it should fill the torque converter and require more fluid. If the level didn't go down from the initial fill once the engine was started, the pump probably isn't working. The filter/shifting mechanism as you call it is the valve body, if you had to remove the filter from it, there is a relief valve that the filter holds in place. If you lose that, you will have no pressure to run the transmission. I haven't worked on a C4 in years, but they are fairly simple transmissions. My website has the 67-69 C4 information in a downloadable pdf form from my ancient Mitchell transmission manual. Maybe that will help some.
The C4 takes 5 1/2 quarts and the converter takes 5 quarts of Type F fluid. So, that is 10 1/2 quarts total. Now, with a deeper pan, you may have to put in even more. How much fluid did you put in?
If i did not fill the torque convertor up initially wont the pump in the transmission fill it up eventually. and also. If the torque convertor gets filled with fluid wont fluid leak from arount the inspection plate.... or am i missing some kind of gasket there. I put about 8 quarts of fluid in the tranny and the fluid doesnt seem to be going down when i start the car. Is there anyway that i can check the pump. Also im not sure if this tells you weather the pump is working or not but when i removed the valve body... (for the second time to check if i had put everything right) it release more fluid than had drained out initially. I bought the tranny from redneck preformance. For those who are wondering. They have been really good about customer service and whatnot. I told them the wrong torque converter and they allowed me to send them the one back and get the right one.
Thanks
Eric
Thanks

Did you make sure you engaged the torque converter? It clicks in twice i believe. it will click in once then you have to turn it and apply pressure to get it to click in the second time. I believe that if it isnt properly engaged and you try and start the car you can destroy the pump.has anybody else heard this?
Good Luck! Hopefully it's something simple
