Did you verify that the distributor was not installed 180 out?
You would still get a spark if the distributor were 180* off, it just wouldn't time properly for ignition.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I'm guessing it has to be a grounding issue of the coil because I'm 98% sure the connections are good (I even tightened the + and - tips and squeezed it on the coil studs). This is all becomming a PITA, but once we get it goin then its all worth it

Make sure that you have a good engine ground, block to frame will work. That had me going for a few minutes after my rebuild. As soon as I put the ground strap on, WHAMO!!! Houston, we have liftoff. And for drivabilities sake, unless you are going for originality, find a Duraspark II setup and ditch the points
