Wiring Alternator/voltage regulator
Hey whatsup,
I just bought a '64 1/2 mustang coupe with a i6 200ci.
I did some work on it and got it to run. I drove it around for about a day and by the end of the day my battery was dead.
The 64's came with a generator and i found out that it had no voltage regulator. i bought an alternator and a voltage regulator to replace the generator but now i'm having trouble wiring it. I'm going to buy the alternator wire loom. I have no experience with this type of wiring.
The alternator does conenct directly in some way to the voltage regulator, right?
Also, other than the 61 amp ford alternator with a wells voltage regulator and the alternator wire loom, do i need anything?

http://www.cjponyparts.com/TechAltWiring.asp You are correct, they do connect in some way. You should be good to go with what you have. Check out the *** section. I had to do the same thing for my 68.
What type of alternator are you replacing? Could have a built in regulator. single pole in back that wire leads to starter side of solenoid.
Even so - goo time to upgrade to 100+amp alternator with built in regulator - Powermaster makes a nice one. Would mek you wiring problems go away.

Your Voltage Regulator also goes on to other parts of the car. Check out the schematics on this link for the 64 and 65. It gives great details of the wiring to and from the VR. http://www.midlife66.com/wiring/wiring.html
HELP please...
I have inherited a 73 coupe 351. I am new here and would appreciate any help. When I picked it up it had no alternator. I went to auto parts andthey gave me a 61 amp alt. The trouble is you can't plug and play like the new stuff. I have on the alt. 5 studs marked STA, FLD, BAT, GRD, and the last one is blank. The wires from the car are as follows( black small gauge batt cable in a two piece) connected to an (orange with blue stripe) and a (white with black stripe) these all run to the solenoid wrapped together.I don't know where these connect since the colors are different. Then the neg batt. cable which i believe can run to the mounting bolts on the alt. to the batt. I would appreciate any help that anyone may have.
thanks,
Mike
