Default Help with Rust Removal

I am currently taking all the paint off the underside of the hood and I have a question about how far I go with the rust removal. There are spots where the sanding has revealed dip pits and black areas after considerable sanding. I have the paint off these spots (and will remove all paint) and as can be seen in the picture I am left with dark areas with pits, but no loose rust.

My question is should I now take an angle gringer and remove these black areas by grinding down to the bare metal, removing all traces of the rust. Or now that I have it sanded this far, can I just hit it with rust encapsulator that will prevent it from reappearing. I am planning to repaint the underside of the hood body color.

Thanks for any help.

Have you tried using a wire wheel on a drill motor, or a wire wheel cup on an angle grinder?.. You may be able to get that out without actually taking a grinding wheel to it.

Agree.. wire wheel should do it. Grinders make deep holes really fast. Deep holes are tough to fill and will look like absolute crap under the hood. If you cant get a wire wheel for your grinder, get out some 40 grit sandpaper and do it by hand. I know its not fast, but it will be a better job with better appearance than a grinder.

i'm going to be doing a similar fix to the underside of my hood - I don't know that I can find paint to match the body color though

- are the engine temps. enough that I should use a special type of paint, otherwise I was going to try a rattle can

not really a rust issue, just needs to be cleaned up more than anything - showing its age!

thanks
