Default Noisy Starter in DD

I had to change out my starter and I wasn't able to get this piece of plastic back in between the housing and the starter. Now when I start my car it sounds like a HUGE zipper. Should I be worried or should I try to put the plastic back in and see what happens? I can live with it if it's normal.

Na, It's a reme from Advance. I don't think it's the motor, but I've got a year to find out. LOL! I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed!

sounds like something is rubbing or not right and when you say housing you mean bell housing and starter if you it should like you need to replace that shim

^ Need a little clarification.

It doesn't make noise in a different pattern than a starter, it's just a little loud. I'm gonna try to slide that piece in my next day off, but I really don't wanna bother with it anymore. It took me forever to get the damn bolts out and almost as long to get them back in. The starter kept falling out and leaning while I was trying to line up the bolts and I needed like a foot and a half more space under the car and another set of hands to hold everything. [&:] Damn GM's!

Maybe I'll see about getting a set of ramps.

sometimes starters need shims to get them into allignment cause the bendix is extending to far and is grinding kinda like a rear end when the teeth arent in the right spot it whines like crazy

The problem there is, the rear facing bolt was a b---- enough without the shim thing and the plastic overlays where the bolt is supposed to go thru.

Oh crap! I forgot it had a screw holding it in there. That's part of the reason I couldn't get it in. I hope I still have the bolt.

I have never had a car that needed a shim to keep the starter in place, I guess Ford is the only company to figure out how to do that without using a shim?????

Let me clarify. My DD is a 93 Buick LeSabre. There is a black plastic shim that gets screwed into the opening where the starter sits, than the starter goes into place and the shim holds the starter in the position it needs to be in.

The sound I am hearing is from the shim not being in place. It's too close to the flywheel and that is causing theziiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnng sound I am subjected to every time I start my car.

I have to remove my starter (again []), replace the shim and re-install the starter. Thank god Jersey is getting a Texas winter. It's supposed to be between 60-75* this weekend!!
