Good question. I was getting ready to ask the same this morning.

First, what's the advantages of the9 compared to the 8/8.8?

Second, does anyone know where I can buy a new 9" rear that will bolt right up into my 66?

They do make new rear ends but they be expensive $$$$. As far as advantage well a 9" can take a lot more beathing than an 8..and some guys are partial to the newer 8.8's...I'm not sure how they measure upto an 8" but they have nothing on a 9". And to find a bolt right in 9" for you 66 you would need to find an older car 66 or earlier not many factory fords after 66 had the narrower 9's. Some people will shorten a longer one, and it does work but you may as well just go find the one your after for the trouble.

This subject comes up time after time. We have all the answers in the FAQ section. It sounds like you are taking out a 7.4 6 banger rear and adding a 65 289 8 incher. The drive shaft length is different.

Unless you're over 500hp and at the track every day launching at 5k rpm, an 8" will be plenty.

According to the info and pictures from the link from scott it does appear to be an 8inch. Its definitly all that I need in toughness, I only plan to be running around 300rwhp and have the car as a daily driver.

Also reading the article the big differences between the 8in and 9in and most all other rear ends like the 7.25, 8.8, and dana's is that the 8 and 9 have removable carriers, not intergral like the others.

Plus I was at work. Most of the time when I try to google for something, I get some crazy off the wall stuff and can never find what I am looking for.

Thanks for the heads up tho.

Thanks Mike. Saved to fave's! It's got a nice sized price tag, but I get what I pay for.
