Question on a good V8 donor car
I just picked up a 67 coupe w/ a I6 and a 3spd
I would like to buy an 80's or early 90's Mustang and transplant the motor, trans and rear end.
I have the V8 disc brake spindles already, so she'll stop.
Is there a particular model year that is better than another for this? When did EFI come into play?
I am sure my thinking is flawed in some way, and please feel free to pick me apart. [:-].

The first EFI engine Ford used in a Mustang was a 4 banger in the '83 model year, and it was a 140 cid engine. The first V8 EFI engine was in the '84 model year, and it was as 302 with a whopping 165 Horsepower. That rocked along in the 80's until 1990 when Ford started putting 225 HP 302's in them. The horsepower ratings got stronger and stronger through the 90's until 98 when the Cobra came out again. It was a 351 with about 300 HP. You might want to think about that 1990 225 HP EFI 302 and build it to around 400 horses.
They also had carbs on Mustangs with 5.0s untill 85, the 86 was the first year EFI was standard on the Mustang. The Mustangs and Trucks have the better heads, Tbirds, Cougars and other V8s had the smaller heads and intakes. If you are planning on replacing the heads with aftermarket items, then any of the 86 up shortblocks will have the hydrualic roller cams and one piece rear seals. Some of the 85s had hydrualic roller cams, but not all of them. 86 was the first year for all of them to have it. You can often use a 5.0 shortblock just like it is under 150,000 miles, they are tough little engines and they take alot of abuse and some didnt wear much in the cylinders. If it were mine, I would pull it apart, check all the clearances add new bearings, rings, and oil pump. You will need a different pan and pick up anyway, so you may as well pull apart the mains and rods and take a look.
Pretty much all of the 5.0s from 79 up need the older oil pan, since they are all rear sump engines and your car will need a front sump. Except for the roller cams, rear main seal, EFI, slight differences in heads, oil pans, and fuel pump provisions, a 302 is still pretty much a 302 even if its called a 5.0L. They bolt in the same way using the same mounts and even some newer automatic transmissions retrofit quite easily.

I have found a 1990 LX mustang V8 auto with 83k and some minor front end damage for $1500.
Will the rest of the powertrain from this 1990 Mustang fit, or with minor modifcations fit?
I am on a limited budget and if I can use everything it would make my life a lot easier.
What if any mods will be needed to fit the trans? I am not sure whichtrans was in a 1990 Mustang?
What mods will be needed for the rearend? Nor am I sure which rearend came in a 1990 Mustang? 8.8???
I went through the FAQ, but I was unable to find the answer to these questions.
Thanks in advance for all your help.

Look for an AOD swap article online, it shouldnt be tough to find. That is the perfect donor, and you can use the EFI if you want, just be sure to gete everything from it including the fuel tank, you need the pickup and pump from it for an EFI swap. Dont cut any wires, and label everything as to what it was when you pulled it off.
The big things with AODs is the crossmember and the TV cable, That TV has to be setup perfectly or you will have junk in minutes. I wouldnt even take them apart, I would put the entire engine and trans in as a unit and use the EFI if it were mine. AOD has a different driveshaft yoke than a C4, so you will need that too.
The 8.8 rear is doable, but its not a bolt in deal. There is a thread on it here, back a few months ago last year. An 8" or a 9" is an easier swap, they came in granadas, mavericks(not the 9" but they could be put under there), and all sorts of other cars that people didnt really want. Just make sure it was a V8 ride and it wont have a wimpy rear end under it.
There should be a rear end length/dimension chart/thread in the FAQ, unless Glen forgot to put it in there. I been lookin for a Fox like that too, but the $ thing keeps me from getting one..lol. Too many other projects to concern myself with a Fox right now..
but it would be perfect for you.

98 when the Cobra came out again. It was a 351 with about 300 HP.

You can use the tank you have now. You just need to get an external electric fuel pump and then plumb a return line to your existing tank. You can route it in at the sending unit. I read that the F150's fuel pump worked well on this swap.

why not swap an 03/04 cobra motor into it?
Oh wait...you said you had a limited budget. Seems as if you are cursed with the same thing as me. So long as the engine and trans are in good running condition and you can pick up teh whole car, it would be perfect for what you want to do. The 8.8 isn't bolt in, just as Thumpin455 said. You would need to go and find a shop that can weld on a leaf spring perch and make sure it is all set at the proper angles and junk. I looked into it for my car, but decided to go with a 9" instead. If you are in So Cal, I do have a complete 8" rear end (minus the drum brakes) that you could buy. It is currently just hanging out in my back yard.
