what way does the counter weight on the fly wheel go in a 289

They flywheel will only bolt on to the crankone way, you can't get it wrong.

lol - at a fast glance, that mistype looked like a big F U!

iirc - the weight goes towards the block. Seems that I see it everytime I take the inspection plate off to check things out.

+ 1 to tghe block cause it will interfere with the torque converter otherwise
