Default Column shifter AOD - Mustang

Did a search and couldn't find any info on this subject. I can get a good deal on a 1989 T-Bird AOD Transmission. The T-Bird has a 5.0 or 302 engine. Is this a good AOD to put in a 67 Mustang with a 289? I know there are issues, because T-Birds had a column shifter, where Mustangs have a floor shifter. Would any mods for this issue need to be done? Or is this a simple parts swap of some kind? Thanks.

there shouldn't be any issues at all but you will have to get or make some linkage anyway to make it work

Just buy a shifter and you'll have everything you need for the tranny.

The AOD would have a TV cable that basically tracks the throttle linkage to determine when to shift up/down (more than a kickdown cable). It is a royal PITA to set up correctly. Personally, I'd wait for an AODE or 4R70W and get the control computer to go along with them. Otherwise, yes, that AOD would work fine in your older Stang.

your 67 has a rod that connects to the trans from the bottom of the shifter, the detents in the trans are very close to those of the shifter. So all you need to do is adapt the linkage rod the the selector of the trans and it should work fine. The AOD pattern is PRN(OD)D1 So its very much like the PRND21 in your car, but the D is OD and 2 is D for the AOD. Make sense? I wish I had an AOD up here so I could post pics and stuff. Only have 3 of them at the farm in Ne.

There might be a difference from the floor to the columnwith that the **** arm on the trans. One points up and the outher points down. You can buy the correct arm fromB&Mto correct this. I can't remeber which one you need but if no one on here can answer this I will look on my car tomorrow for you..

LCC.
If you could find the part number, that would be great. So, should I go ahead and buy the T-Bird AOD? Or should I just keep looking for a Mustang AOD, so I don't have any other issues? Thanks for all the replys so far.

Only one AOD size and nunber of clutches was built, a few upgrades over the years but as long as it isnt an AODE, its the same piece for the Mustang that it was for a T bird. at least as far as I have seen with them.

Almost forgot.. You will need an early carb type TV cable, it is not a kickdown cable, it takes the place of a vacuum modulator. You will also need a carb that has the same pull distance and geometry as a stock carb that was installed with the AOD. Without that adjusted properly you will have junk in minutes.
