Default RE: Column shifter AOD - Mustang

Just confirmed the T-Bird is a 1992 with a V-8 and AOD tranny. I can get the whole car (engine has thrown a rod) for $300. I didn't realize, but the shifter is on the floor, not on the column. So I plan on buying the whole car to get all the parts I need. Anyone know if the AOD shifter and crossmember parts will work?

Thumpin455,
Tell me more about the carb issue. This is the first I have heard about it in all the web searches I have read since I have been thinking about doing the AOD.
You will also need a carb that has the same pull distance and geometry as a stock carb that was installed with the AOD. Without that adjusted properly you will have junk in minutes.
My stang now has a Holley 4160 carb on it. Do you think this will work with the TV cable? I take it the 1992 T-bird has fuel injection, so I will have to purchase a TV cable off a car with a carb, 86 to 87? I have heard that if you don't have things adjusted right, the tranny is toast in minutes.

My 88 Crown Vic PI had a carb with an AOD, so this may be an option, too. If you're getting the whole car, you may want to consider keeping the EFI, IMO.

Did a google search, came up with this.. Look around with "AOD linkage" in google and you will find the info you need.

If it was really tough or obscure I would do it all for you, but there is a huge amount of info available.. Enjoy..

You might have a AOD that was connected to a 302 V8 but it wasn't in a Thunderbird. 1989 is the only year the T Bird did not have an available V8 engine. It was either a V6 or a V6 Supercharged. 1990 is the first year a V8 option was available for the new T Bird body style that debuted in 1989. I know because I wanted my wife to buy the SC coupe but she didn't want to drive a manual. So we bought a V 6 LX T Bird.

Stay away from V6 trannys. 89-93 are the best years.
Even if you get a Crown Vic column shifted tranny, you can remove the shift lever and reverse it. The only thing special about the B+M lever is the dia. of the hole.
Mustang shifter detents do not quite match the tranny detents. I had to regrind the detent lands in the shifter to make it work.
