Default transmission

I have a 65 fastback 2+2 with a automatic transmission I would like to upgrade to a late model trans with overdrive how hard is this?
If this is not possible I would like to convert it to a 5 speed but have limited funds and cant afford the new tremic deal any suggestions?
I have heard you cant go auto to manual because of engine balance issuses.

The T5 is a possible swap, you need a V8 T5 and the clutch conversion that allows for the different clutch direction. The flywheel itself is what needs the balance, so you get one for the year engine you have. Pretty sure there is a link or two in the FAQ about a T5 swap, and they can be found in junkyards relatively easily.
Do some research in the FAQ rather than me or someone else type it all out again..

I would opt for the T5 as thumpin suggested before you try an AOD. The AOD's are notoriously weak unless you get a built-up one, you'll be a lot happier with the T5

Or, you could add an overdrive to the C4. That information is also in the FAQ.

Missed that you wouldnt mind an AOD.. For a relatively stock ride they work good. They came in light trucks like F150s, so they arent made of glass, but for cars making serious power, they need some help. A built AOD can handle a 3500lb car running 9s, but you are lookin at $5000 for the trans alone, usually a performance build will be around $3000 for an AOD, its a relatively easy swap once you get the TV cable right. geometry is a big thing as is proper adjustment.
