what axle do I have ? 19641/2 u-code 4-lug. upgraded to 289
Hi all,
i believe my differential needs overhaul. So I was looking into either the full 3rd member, or just ring and pinion.
Anyways I don't know what I'm looking for as I don't know what axle (size) I have :-(
originally it's a 1964 1/2 U-Code mustang.
Someone planted a 289 V8 into it before I bought it.
I don't know if the axle was changed. But if you don't need to change anything bacak there for an engine swap I'm pretty sure they didn't change.
The car has 4-lug wheels. (the nice bullethole ones ...)
that's all I know so far.
I believe there was a label still attached to the differential. I'll get a picture of this tonight and will try to see what's on the label in case it's still there.
Can anyone help me on that please ?
And in case I have the information. Does anyone know a place to shop for this (apart from currie and jegs. i know them). calmustang don't do differential parts as it seems ..

if its 4 lug you need to buy a new axle. very little chances someone took an 8 inch rear end and put 4 lug brakes on it.
you can get a new axle from a variety of donor cars or you can buy one new for about $1000.

nah live in Ireland at the moment.
So no way I'll get one from the local junk yard ;-)
where would you get a new axle with differential for 1000$ ?
Didn't make it to the garage, so i'll have to post the tag at a later stage.
I'm pretty convinced as well it's not an 8", but what did the U-Code 3 speed manual original come with ? what size ?

if im not mistaken its like a 7.5 or something like that. its not an 8' and its a very weak rear end. find yourself an 8' or 9' to swap out of it. no junkyards in ireland huh?

check out mustangdepot or currie (mustangdepot sells currie) they have complete rears for sale so you can just do an entire swap and no more worries!!
ohhh and you might want to check with the mustangs club in england.

I just removed what I believe to be the same axle you have from my sons 66. (This week). I replaced it with a Currie 9" with SSBC dick brake kit (from Summit) for mustang. It seems as if you are not a fan of Currie, but the instalation was a simple (perfect) bolt in afair, and only took a few hours to fully complete instalation, including brake lines (not included in kit), e-brake hookup, and the addition of a lift kit to raise the car 2" (not included).
We ordered the axle over the phone direct from Currie, they delivered the axle as ordered, for the price quoted, and on time.
There was only really one hangup, my son bought the brakes before he bought the axle so we had to order the axle to fit the brake kit by specifying that the axle have the "small wheel bearing" (as did the stock V-8 Mustang).
If you want, I can let you have the orig axle, (only 66,000 miles) ,,, if you really want it, (which I doubt), just pay shipping and it is yours!!
