Default Long Term Storage

Very good chance I'm being deployed overseas. What should I do to store my 68 - may be a year or more before I'll be back.

The first thing I would do, would be to ask some questions on base. You may be able to get the US government to store your auto just as they would your household goods. Check with either your first sergeant or your CO to see. If not, then rent a storage facility just big enough to get your Stang in it. You will be receiving hazardous duty (combat) pay, so you will be able to afford it.

Pull the carb off, put it in a small cooler full of gas and seal the cooler. put a carb plate on the hole. Pull valve covers off and loosen valves that are down (open) or part down. set valve covers back where they go. Put about 20 gt of oil in engine, Can be use oil or crap oil. Pull plugs and squirt a little wd 40 in each hole and replace plug. If radiator has any water in it drain radiator and fill complete system with antifreeze only.

When you go to start engine, drain oil, put new oil in and new filter, reset valves where they were, remove carb plate and drain carb of gas,( the gas is no good , don't leave it in carb) replace carb on engine,(I would use some carb cleaner here on the carb just to get any varnish from gas sitting off). Put valve covers on, Start engine, It will smoke a little because of theWD 40 but it should go right away, engine should be as you left it.
Done this many times.

I forgot about the fuel in the tank, Good point, I don't know anything about fuel stabilizer , I used to fill the tank and when I got ready to drive the car again I would drain it, Gas was cheap then though, Fill the tank keeps the inside of the tank from rusting from moisture.
Another thing I forgot was to take the weight off the tires, jack it up on blocks . And give the tires/wheels a good coat of silicone spray. Silicone based oil spray.

I have had good experience with Sta-Bil fuel treatment. It's only a few bucks for the bottle. I'd recommend to start by pouring it in with a less than full tank. Drive around about 10-20 miles to be sure the treatment works its way from your tank through your lines and to the carb (if you're not removing it, that is). Then top off your tank to help prevent rusting.

Depending if its cold where you are storing it, you could put pieces of plywood under the tires to keep them off direct contact from the concrete. Unfortunately that won't help flat spots, but better than nothing if you don't have jack stands. The only other things I might add would be to disconnect/remove the battery. (Hey, you never know...it could be a theft deterrent!)

Oh, if you do a lot for the storage prep, it couldn't hurt to keep a list of it in your glove box so that you can remember where any rags may be stuffed. Don't worry about Sta-Bil...it'll burn off with no noticable effect.

Best of luck.

See I knew there was something else. I also forgot about the battery. Take it out. store it on a piece of wood. , Charge it before you put it back in. The wood acts as a insulator for positive to ground though the battery case.

If you do get sent overseas, be careful my friend, and stay safe, we are all proud of you.
