Doesn't sound like a shelby to me. If it was, it would have a shelby vin riveted over the ford vin. Or so I have heard about those ubiquitous shelbys

Never heard of an S code shelby - but I could be wrong. I thought all the big block shelbys were 428's...

There actually were S-code GT-500's...it wasnt well publicized but Ford had a shortage of 428 engines and installed some 390's into Shelby's. The VIN is for a Mustang not a Shelby. Shelbys had a different numbering system. Check out http://www.classicmustang.com/tech%2...helby_VINS.htmfor finding other VIN locations on this car. It also explains the numbering system.

Personally, the car sounds hinky so be careful.

That may very well be a 390 S code car, but it is not a Shelby. The Shelby VIN numbering system is completely different as you can see here..And, I have never heard of or seen anything but a 428 500 Shelby Gt. http://www.classicmustang.com/tech%2...helby_VINS.htm

if you check on google for the first part of the VIN, you find something like that
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1967-...42117910QQrdZ1

very rare factory 390 S car with rare FACTORY TRI POWER carbs.

a few other references state Fastback 390GTA
no idea if all the above is correct, but might help

There were actually a couple different engines used in GT500's...in 1967 the most common engine was the 428 Police Interceptor, but the 390 was used in several cars when 428's became scarce...also there were a handful of 1967 GT500's that had a 427 in them. In 1968 the cars came from the factory with only 428's, but there was a dealer installed option for the 427. Very few of these cars have been verified since the dealer would have to verify that they did truely install the 427 at the dealership. There are as few as 10 known examples of these cars last time I knew.
