If your going to do highway driving, I would go with 3.25's. I have 3.55's and RPM's are tooo high when I'm on the highway, which is very little.

I currently have 3.55 butwill be changing to 3.25 or 3.00 soon.
I found 3.00 to be the perfect gear for me. Pleanty of go from a stop (can even chirp trough 2nd), plus not too bad on the highway, highest I'd ever go without overdrive is 3.25. Man that gear vendors setup is sweet if not pricey!
Okay, so last week I posted that I was putting in this Cam into my 289 w/C4 auto and AFR 165cc heads:

Based upon some reply posts that noticed that the Comp Cam recommendations on this webpage were 3.2 - 4.1, most people said to get AT LEAST 3.5s, if not 3.7+. I ordered 3.55 ring and pinion kit from Jegs, and its on its way.
Sounds like I'm not going to be able to do over 65MPH without winding the **** out of the engine? Or would this particular Cam I bought get me more high end MPH?

well the 289 is a high reving engine due to its relativly short stroke so if you don't mind the noise then go for it, its not gunna be that bad really but you will be fast as hell
Muggsy, you could have a 3.55 pumpkin, a 4.11 pumpkin, and a 3.00 pumpkin, all set up and eaqsy to swap. If one doesnt work for you, the other will untill you want to change something again. Just get junkyard carriers, the 3.00 gears can be a stock set with a posi in them, and then you have a choice. If you do more highway driving, swap in the 3.00, if you wanna go racing, put in the 4.11 or 3.55 and see what difference it makes on ET.. it doesnt really cost that much to set up three or four 3rd members and have them sitting around. Old refrigerators work good for storage.. it only takes about half an hour to swap them, and a bit of lube.. no big deal.
old fridge, one that doesnt work.. they are air tight and will hold a good amount of stuff. Keeping it dust and rust free..
not the one were you keep the beer, oranges, milk, and eggs...

you are all talking about what kind of gears you are running but not how many gears you have. a 3.55 is going to run completely different in a 4 speed than a 3 speed. I have an AOD and have a 4.11 pumpkin and 3.55's
