Default C-4 Transmission

I have a 302 hooked to a C-4. The transmission always prematuraly shifts. Like in drive, under full power it will shift gears, all of them 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 at around 2500-3000 rpm. i can never get any power built up and if frustrates the hell out of me. If I am going along in 3rd and mat it it wont down shift either, it will just try to pull itselft up in 3rd from like 2500 rpm. I know i can manually shift up, but ive heared its bad to manually down shift. Plus this shouldnt be happenening in the first place. Whats wrong and what can i do about it?

A few ideas...

Check the vaccuum line running from your intake manifold to the carb. Sounds like the vaccuum modulator valve on the tranny isn't getting any vaccuum signal to indicate WOT. Assuming you have the steel line running from the engine down to the tranny, check the short piece of rubber hose that connects from the steel line to the VM valve. In my 64.5, it was easily kinked so I had to put enough on it to make a gentle loop. I would also check the stepdown bar that runs from the carb to the tranny. Make sure it's hooked up and getting pushed when you hammer the go pedal. I know that can be frustrating. Best of luck...
