Default 351w cam question

yo guys, go a 351w block not sure if its a roller so got a question
1) if its a roller block, what cam would u suggest and if i were to put a .600 or so lift cam in would it work with the stock heads
and.
2) if its a flat tappet, what cam would u suggest and would a .600 or so lift cam work and would it work wit hte stock iron heads.

realize that the cam and intake are all i m doin the heads will stay stock till i get the money. so for now they are stock so i m gauging for later down the line for heads.

To run a .600 lift cam you'll need to get some better valve springs and have them installed. You may even have to buy different pistons that have valve reliefs on them instead of factory flat tops.

On the valve springs you'll just have to look, but crane has some double ones that accept up to a .754 lift cam. I'm running a .540 lift right now and have double valve springs.

well also what cam is a good one. realize that emissions will mean nothing so i m not worried. i was thinkin about a crane cam, and would it work with a speed density setup

also this may sound like a dumb question but will any old 4 speed toploader mount up to a 351w or will i have to find a spcific one, and usually how much do they cost?

Lift isnt as important as duration and valve timing when it comes to EFI, and also when using stock heads. A .600 lift cam will have a long duration, some more than others. You could have a 255 duration at .050 lift cam with .600 lift and it would be a pig with stock heads. The heads would choke it too much.

How much power do you want? how fast do you want the car to be? How much are you willing to put up with to drive it? There will be issues and special instructions if you go for high HP.. my 600+ car is fun to drive for a while, bombing around, scarring old ladies and ricers, but for a daily driver it would severly suck. Not only in fuel requirements, but getting it started every day, dealing with the heat and noise, and that car leaves you beat up like a hockey goalie after a short cruise.

Anyway.. also need to know what gears you want to run, how heavy your car is, what intake, carb, and why you wont switch to aftermarket heads? Because a cam that big will need them, or it will be a pig..

yea i knew about all these things thats why i am goin wit a 4 speed toploader and the car will no longer be my evrydy, but i got 373's i am gonna prob go carb with a edelbrock intake and a holley 700 cfm and the car weighs about 3050 with me in it, and i do want to switch to aftermarket heads its just that will be a little later down the line due to the expense so i want to get hte rest done first. the top end wont be that hard for me but installing a cam will and i would like to run the car a little with the cam. plus i am still decidign on what heads to go with.

It seems to me that you should just run your stock engine and save your money to get enough to rebuild the entire engine at once. That way, all the parts are matched, and broken in together. It won't kill you to drive a stock engine for a few years. I know.....I've been doing it for 10.
