That has got to be my new favorite oxymoron - 2 barrel performance intake. Go with a 4 barrel, either a Weiand Stealth or an Edelbrock Performer/Performer RPM. Search the forums, there is a lot of great information that has already been covered here.

while you'd be well served to get a 600 or 625 4bbl you could use a adapter plate to throw that 500 on there and have all 500 cfm right away instead of only having half of the 600 or 625 off the line. im betting a good 4bbl intake with that 500 2 barrel would be pretty damn good actually

1996-1997 explorer 5.0 head will give u a nice boost in power they flow more than the fabled 69-70 351w heads and area dime a dozen at the junkyards these will certainly help you reach a goal of 300hp alot easier just have them milled down to raise the compression a bit qand buy a set or pushrods for a pedstal type set up instead of rail type get a weiand intake a 4bbl and a decent cam and some roller rockers for a good plan

With the exception of scott, I don't think anyone has asked what the condition of the existing engine is, how many miles etc. First thing to do would be to get the car in good running condition, full tune up, carb adjustmentetc. I would then do a compression and blowby test on the engine to see if it is within specs. Why pump money into a shot, or close to shot, engine. If everything tested well, I would then look into a mild cam, 4bbl and headers, pertronix ignition. Nitrous? on a 40year old engine? no way. You also have to appreciate, that even with a mild cam etc., if you start beating on the engine, it can put it in the grave quick. IMO, start with the small maintenance / testing stuff, confirm engine is in good conditionand then think about upgrades. Also, don't forget the oil pump. Start reving that engine high and that original drive shaft will twist and snap. Ask me how I know.....Point is, you have to have a solid foundation before you start adding stuff, or else you won't even get the full effect of the go fast goodies.
Good luck

very good advice - and that brings up the great point that ALL you guys building a new motor should spend the 10 or 20 bucks on a stronger oil pump driveshaft (and a quality pump)
